Integrate systems. Tame complexity. Innovate production.
The Mechatronics Lab is an advanced learning environment for training in integrated automation, combining mechanics, electronics, computing and control. Designed for technical and vocational schools, it lets students acquire the multidisciplinary skills essential for facing the challenges of Industry 4.0 and 5.0, working with collaborative robots, PLC systems, smart sensors and digital simulators.
Designed for upper-secondary curricular pathways, work-based learning and interdisciplinary projects, the lab is also ideal for activities focused on problem solving, prototyping and advanced educational robotics.
Learning objectives
- Acquire skills in integrating mechanical, electrical, electronic and IT subsystems.
- Program and manage Siemens, Fanuc or Fagor programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Operate with 6-axis collaborative robotic arms (e.g. COMAU e.DO), simulators and pick&place systems.
- Develop automation and sensor applications (electropneumatics, electrohydraulics, machine vision).
- Simulate automated production cycles with flexible cells.
- Design and control mechatronic processes through CAD/CAM environments and simulation software.
Skills developed
- Design, assembly and testing of mechatronic systems.
- Programming industrial robots and line simulators.
- Remote control and simulation of integrated production cells.
- Diagnostics and predictive maintenance on automated systems.
- Use of multi-CNC software (Winunisoft+) for simulation and control with Siemens, Fanuc, Fagor interfaces.
- Integration of sensors, actuators and machine vision on PLCs.
Hands-on exercises (examples)
- Programming and simulating the movement of robotic arms (e.DO COMAU).
- Assembling pneumo-electric microcircuits with modular benches.
- Developing and testing a mechatronic cell with conveyor, pick&place, PID control.
- Applying vision systems for automatic part inspection.
- Creating CAD layouts with mechatronic components and CAM simulation.
- Testing PLC systems with ON/OFF, PID, motion control and safety logic.
Technical equipment (examples)
- COMAU e.DO educational collaborative robotic arms or equivalent.
- Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs with HMI and TIA Portal software.
- Software simulators of robotic arms and virtual work environments (TwinCAT, FluidSIM, Winunisoft).
- Benches for pneumatic, electropneumatic and hydraulic tests.
- Sensor and actuator kits for process integration.
- CNC centers interfaceable with modular mechatronic systems (Alecop CNC + Atenea Multicontrol).
- Touch monitors for visual programming and augmented reality with StemLab.
- CAD/CAM workstations, design software (SolidWorks, Inventor), 3D emulators.
Curricular integration
The lab integrates into the pathways of:
- Technical institutes – Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy specialization
- Vocational institutes – Industry and Crafts for Made in Italy
- Work-based learning projects and STEM pathways
- Educational robotics and automation activities for the second two-year cycle
Accessibility and inclusion
The Mechatronics Lab can be configured with an inclusive approach: modular workstations, accessible digital tools, multilingual tutorials and compensatory aids for students with learning disabilities, visual or motor disabilities. The use of virtual environments and remote simulators enables full participation even remotely or in conditions of fragility.
- Simplified, intuitive graphical interfaces for CAD/PLC activities.
- Virtual labs accessible via browser and mobile devices.
- Voice support, subtitling and high-readability manuals.
- Cooperative protocols for group work and active inclusion.
With Kyron labs dedicated to Mechatronics, the school becomes an engine of technical innovation, where concrete skills are developed for a smart, integrated and sustainable production future.
