Automate the future. Connect skills. Innovate teaching.
The Industry 4.0 Lab is a cutting-edge learning environment designed to give students an integrated, hands-on understanding of the key technologies of the fourth industrial revolution: automation, robotics, smart sensors, process control, industrial communication and human-machine interfaces. Thanks to real systems and simulated environments, students acquire cross-curricular skills useful for facing the new interconnected, digitalized production scenarios.
Designed for technical and vocational schools in the mechanical, electrical, electronics and IT sectors, the lab fully integrates into work-based learning, interdisciplinary projects and final-year curricular activities.
Learning objectives
- Acquire technical skills in industrial automation and cyber-physical systems.
- Develop hands-on abilities using PLCs, sensors, actuators and educational robots.
- Learn how open-loop and closed-loop controls work.
- Understand the logic of industrial communication (e.g. Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP).
- Strengthen digital skills for designing and managing 4.0 systems.
Skills developed
- Programming Siemens logic controllers (PLCs) with standard IEC 61131 languages.
- Building automated systems via connected modular systems.
- Managing industrial processes with SCADA control and EasyPort software.
- Using PID control systems in fluidic and mechatronic environments.
- Analyzing process data for energy efficiency and continuous improvement.
Hands-on exercises (examples)
- Closed-loop control of flow, pressure and temperature with EduKit PA kits and sensors.
- Programming automated systems with Siemens PLCs, digital and analog I/O.
- Designing and testing electropneumatic and hydraulic systems.
- Integrating HMI interfaces for visualization and remote control.
- Simulating and analyzing automation processes with dedicated software (PID, SCADA, OPC-UA).
- Exercises on modular benches, ideal for STEM and interdisciplinary training.
Technical equipment (examples)
- Modular workbenches with Alecop systems.
- Siemens PLCs with HMI panels, S7-1200 CPU and TIA Portal software.
- Process-automation and pneumatics training kits (Base + Advanced).
- EasyPort USB for interfacing with PC and control software.
- All-in-One PC with Windows 11, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD.
- Pressure, flow and temperature sensors, solenoid valves, relays, inverters.
- Collaborative robots and production-line simulators (optional).
Curricular integration
The lab integrates into the following pathways:
- Technical institutes – Mechanics, Mechatronics, Electronics, Automation specializations
- Vocational institutes – Technical Maintenance and Assistance, Industry and Crafts
- Work-based learning (Cross-curricular and Career Guidance pathways)
- Projects on digital transition, sustainability and innovation
Accessibility and inclusion
The Industry 4.0 Lab is designed to be accessible and inclusive, in line with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Workstations can be height-adjusted, fitted for ergonomic supports and equipped with assistive tools for students with learning disabilities or sensory disabilities. Available features include:
- Simplified HMI interfaces with visual and tactile support.
