Applied Mechanics Lab

Build technique. Master motion. Experiment with innovation.

The Applied Mechanics Lab is a comprehensive learning space designed to offer an immersive teaching experience in industrial mechanics, technical maintenance and electromechanics. The lab enables students to develop operational and design skills through the use of real equipment, simulators, test benches and cutting-edge digital tools.

Designed for technical and vocational schools with mechanical, industrial or maintenance specializations, the lab integrates seamlessly into curricular pathways, work-based learning and interdisciplinary projects.

Learning objectives

  • Acquire hands-on skills in basic and advanced mechanical maintenance (transmission components, motors, hydraulic and pneumatic systems).
  • Develop skills in using professional machinery and tools: lathes, milling machines, pillar drills, test benches.
  • Understand the principles of electromechanics and mechatronics: electric motors, control panels, PLCs, sensors.
  • Introduce fault-diagnosis and predictive-maintenance techniques.
  • Promote safe equipment use, regulatory compliance and teamwork.

Skills developed

  • Reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Assembly, disassembly, testing and maintenance of mechanical components.
  • Wiring and control of industrial electromechanical systems.
  • Using measurement instruments, testers, multimeters, comparators, digital calipers.
  • Developing preventive and corrective maintenance protocols.
  • Using CAD/CAM software for technical drawing and manufacturing preparation.

Hands-on exercises (examples)

  • Mechanical fault diagnosis on training benches with real systems.
  • Alignment and coupling of shafts, pulleys, gears and reducers.
  • Assembly of pneumatic and hydraulic systems with functional verification.
  • Wiring three-phase electric motors with inverter and PLC control.
  • Maintenance simulations on industrial components and automated lines.
  • Tests on metallic materials: hardness, strength, friction and deformability.

Technical equipment (examples)

  • Training benches for mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics and motor exercises.
  • Parallel lathes, pillar drills, milling machines, workbenches with vise.
  • Professional tool kits (torque wrenches, pullers, special tools).
  • Teaching modules with Siemens PLC boards, asynchronous motors and sensors.
  • Panels and simulators of pneumatic and hydraulic circuits.
  • CAD workstations with software for technical drawing and simulations.

Curricular integration

The lab is designed to be integrated with the following pathways:

  • Technical institutes – Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy specialization
  • Vocational institutes – Technical Maintenance and Assistance
  • Work-based learning and interdisciplinary projects on energy, automation and Industry 4.0

Accessibility and inclusion

The lab follows Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, guaranteeing ergonomic, height-adjustable workstations accessible to students with motor disabilities. Available features include:

  • Simplified graphical interfaces and video tutorials to support students with learning disabilities.
  • CAD software with magnification, text-to-speech and assisted-navigation tools.
  • Guided exercise pathways in small groups to promote cooperative work.

With Kyron labs dedicated to mechanics, the school becomes a workshop of the future, where theory and practice merge to train competent, flexible technicians ready for Industry 4.0.

Technical support and teacher training

  • Support with lab design, installation and testing.
  • Tailored technical and methodological training for the teaching team.
  • Technical manuals and video guides always available online.
  • After-sales technical assistance and continuous technological updates.
