Design the future. Print big. Innovate in form.
The CAD Design and Large-Format Printing Lab is an advanced educational space designed to guide students in discovering digital technologies for technical drawing, creative ideation and the physical production of prototypes and graphics at large scale. By integrating professional software, high-performance workstations and large-format 3D or inkjet printers, the lab develops a cross-disciplinary competence spanning design, engineering, architecture, graphics and visual communication.
Designed for technical and vocational schools, this lab fits perfectly into work-based learning paths, multidisciplinary STEM projects, vocational training courses and curricula related to design, mechanics and production.
Learning objectives
- Learn 2D and 3D modelling techniques with professional CAD software.
- Develop skills in editing, format management and digital printing on rigid or flexible media.
- Learn about the materials and media most used in technical and graphic printing.
- Optimize production through structural simulations and technical analysis of digital models.
- Foster teamwork and the adoption of collaborative workflows for the full cycle: ideation → design → printing.
Skills developed
- Creation of technical, graphic and architectural projects using CAD (2D/3D) and CAM software.
- Modelling of objects intended for physical prototyping or visual rendering.
- Preparation of print files for output on plotters, UV printers and 3D printing, with attention to colour profile, resolution and format.
- Use of large-format 3D printers and plotters for prototypes, technical infographics, communication panels or teaching structures.
- Development of large-scale communication solutions: school signage, exhibition setups, product prototypes, architectural mock-ups.
Practical exercises (examples)
- 3D modelling and print preparation with slicer software.
- 3D printing of functional prototypes, mechanical components, customized objects.
- Design and printing of technical graphic outputs (plans, sections, exploded views).
- Large-format reproduction of school and professional projects (e.g. architectural drawings, technical posters, teaching aids).
- Assembly simulations and dimensional verification of printed models.
- Scanning and reverse engineering using 3D scanners.
Technical equipment (examples)
- High-performance workstations with Intel Core i7/i9 processors and GPUs for modelling and rendering.
- Professional CAD/CAM software for parametric and free-form modelling (e.g. AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Rhino, SketchUp).
- Large-format 3D printers (e.g. 300x330x600 mm) and multicolour printing.
- Inkjet plotters and bench cutters for paper, vinyl, rigid media.
- High-precision 3D scanners for digitization and reverse engineering.
- Consumables: PLA, ABS, PET, technical paper, adhesive vinyl, foam board or honeycomb cardboard supports.
Curricular integration
The lab integrates into the following tracks:
- Technical schools – Mechanics, Mechatronics and Energy; Graphics and Communication; Construction, Environment and Territory.
- Vocational schools – Industry and Crafts for Made in Italy; Commercial Services.
- Work-based learning and multidisciplinary projects on innovation, design and sustainability.
Accessibility and inclusion
The lab is designed according to the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Workstations are modular and inclusive, with adjustable benches, accessible stations, software with simplified interfaces, highly legible multimedia materials and digital aids for independent comprehension. Magnification tools, voice commands and guided paths make the lab experience usable also for students with sensory disabilities or specific learning disorders.
Technical support and teacher training
- Consultancy for the design and installation of the lab.
- Methodological and technical training on the use of software and printers.
- Access to video lessons, technical manuals, updated exercises.
- Continuous post-installation support and updates on new technologies.
