Biomedical Labs

Technology for health. Innovation for training. Science at the service of teaching.

Biomedical labs are advanced educational environments designed to prepare students to face, with competence and awareness, the challenges of healthcare, biological and technical professions. These spaces reproduce, for teaching purposes, the main applications of technology in the medical and care sector: from diagnostics to vital-sign monitoring, from rehabilitation to instrumental therapies.

Ideal for vocational and technical tracks in the health field, biomedical labs can be integrated into work-based learning paths, interdisciplinary projects and curricular activities of the upper years.

Learning objectives

  • Introduce biomedical technologies and their use in diagnosis, monitoring and therapy.
  • Foster the acquisition of practical skills in the use of simulated medical instrumentation.
  • Promote health and prevention education.
  • Stimulate the scientific approach, teamwork and the analysis of clinical data.
  • Connect STEM disciplines, biology, physiology and human anatomy to real application cases.

Examples of skills developed

  • Measurement and interpretation of vital signs: blood pressure, heart rate, saturation, body temperature.
  • Use of software for monitoring and analysing physiological signals.
  • Simulation of rehabilitation therapies: electrostimulation, ultrasound, magnetotherapy.
  • Application of hygiene and safety principles in simulated healthcare contexts.
  • Recognition of the functions and correct use of biomedical instrumentation.

Examples of practical exercises

  • Human-body monitoring: use of wireless sensors, ECG, pulse oximeters and detection stations to build clinical profiles.
  • Simulation of physical therapies: electrotherapy, TENS, magnetotherapy and ultrasound to understand rehabilitation and pain-relief techniques.
  • Physiological assessment protocols: collection and comparison of biometric data among students, in individual and collaborative activities.
  • Postural and motor analysis: use of stabilometric platforms, muscle tests and feedback tools for rehabilitation.

Technical equipment (examples)

  • Multimedia workstations with software for simulation and management of physiological data.
  • Electrocardiographs, pulse oximeters, sphygmomanometers, electronic stethoscopes.
  • Equipment for physical therapies: TENS devices, magnetotherapy, ultrasound, muscle electrostimulators.
  • Kits for postural assessment, proprioceptive platforms, stabilometers.
  • Integrated home-automation interface for realistic environmental-monitoring scenarios.

Curricular integration

The biomedical lab integrates with:

  • Vocational tracks “Services for Health and Social Care”
  • Technical tracks “Chemistry, materials and biotechnology – Health Biotechnology specialization”
  • Paths for Social-Healthcare Operators
  • Work-based learning activities in partnership with healthcare or care facilities
  • CLIL, STEM and multidisciplinary learning-unit projects

Accessibility and inclusion

The lab is designed according to the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). It provides:

  • adapted workstations for students with motor or sensory disabilities,
  • voice interfaces and multisensory feedback,
  • cooperative activities and flexible modes of interaction.

Technical support and teacher training

  • Shared design with the relevant department
  • Complete installation and testing of the equipment
  • Technical-methodological training for teaching use
  • Operating manuals, video tutorials and exercise packages
  • Support for curricular integration and the drafting of learning units

Why choose this lab

  • Experiential and technological approach to health
  • Development of professionalizing skills in the healthcare field
  • Preparation for the professions of the future in the biomedical field
  • Integration with scientific, technical and humanistic disciplines

With the Kyron labs dedicated to the biomedical field, the school becomes a laboratory of health, where technology meets education and the future of social-healthcare professions is built.
